Stranded Island Books: What to Bring?

by L.J. Sellers, author or provocative mysteries & thrillers

In the wake of last month''s violence, I struggled with the right topic to blog about. I wanted to share something personal, then decided to post it on my website blog instead. So for this site, I have something light and hopefully fun.

Here are my top 10 books I'd want with me if I were stranded on an island:
  • The Stand by Stephen King (long and captivating)
  • The First Deadly Sin by Lawrence Sanders (long and captivating)
  • The Witching Hour by Anne Rice (long and captivating)
  • The Tomorrow File by Lawrence Sanders (incredible futuristic novel)
  • Chiefs by Stuart Woods (one of his first and quite amazing)
  • Under the Dome by Stephen King (because I haven’t read it and it’s long)
  • The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson (because I haven’t read it and it’s long)
  • A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein (for a fun change of pace)
  • War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (gotta get around to it sooner or later)
  • Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe (might be useful)
What books would you bring? Name as many or as few as you'd like.

  1. Oh my goodness. I'd probably bring all of my Harry Potter books. My Lord of the Rings trilogy. A selection of Agatha Christie, notably MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS and DEATH ON THE NIL. A couple Robert Ludlum thrillers selected at random. Tom Clancy's THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER.

Really, can I just get a regular air-drop to replenish the pile?

  2. This is a fun idea, but it's extremely frustrating to try to narrow down which titles I'd want. The complete Jane Austen, the complete works of L.M. Montgomery, the complete Harry Potter series...

Yeah, I'll go with Mary's idea of a regular book-drop.

  3. I'd need more than 10 books! I'd probably take stacks of books by my favorite thriller and crime fiction writers, like Robert Crais, Lee Child, Sandra Brown, Michael Connelly, LJ Sellers, Janet Evanovich, Harlan Coben, Lisa Gardner, Dean Koontz -- and of course the latest by Peg, Drew and the rest of the CFC writers -- plus some great historical fiction.

  4. Okay, I'll chime in. The Collected Stories of Eudora Welty, The Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens, the Aeneid (which translation?), Joyce's Ulysses (maybe then I'd get through it), ditto Gravity's Rainbow, Emma, Pride and Prejudice (can't decide between them, so have to take both), the Bible (I'm not religious, but talk about a collection of drama and intrigue!), anything by Robert Crais and 100 Years of Solitude (which I've read three times, but could always do it a few more). And then I'd keep my eyes on the skies for the book drop.

  5. I love Lawrence Sanders. This is when Kindle isn't an option for long, so I'd bring along Nelson DeMille and Lee Child, also Sandra Brown and Michael Connolly. Jodie and I could share :-)

  6. I would want to be stranded on an island with all of you! Great book choices. A couple more I'd like to add because one day I'd like to reread them are A Man in Full by Tom Wolfe, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells. And bunches and bunches and bunches of blank paper and pens so we can make new ones!

  7. I'd have a hard time just taking ten books. Can't I load up my Kindle and bring it?

  8. Since you named Stephen King, I'll throw in two of my King favorites: The Shining (absolutely terrifying) and Pet Semetery (my skin crawls when I read King's descriptions of the walk to the cemetery.

As for straight-up crime/mystery, the collected works of George Pelecanos. His novels would be a reminder of the stimulating vitality of American life as I languished on a desert Island.

  9. I'm with Andrew. Let's just load up the Kindle. Of course, without a power source to keep the battery charged...

Oh well. I'd bring A Prayer for Owen Meany, Les Misrables, A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Intensity (Dean Koontz), the Bible, Black Beauty, Dashiell Hammett Complete Novels (5 in one book), Pronoia (Rob Brezsny), The Count of Monte Cristo, and A View from A Broad (Bette Midler).
